Mowers General

What mower is right for me?

How big is your lawn?
For small to medium lawns up to 100m² - Hand Powered/Electric
For medium to large lawns, 30m² - 900m² - Electric/Petrol
For large lawns 1/3 - 4 acres - Petrol Tractor

Grass collection
Choosing a mower with grass collection will leave you with a tidier lawn. Rear or centrally mounted grass boxes are ideal where border plants or overhanging bushes may be damaged, whilst front fitting grass boxes are traditional and ideal where the above are not a problem.

Hints:
If you have a lawn with difficult access areas, buy a trimmer to finish off the job
The wider the cut the less time you’ll spend mowing
For stripes choose a mower with roller
Look for larger collection boxes for less emptying

Mowers - Cylinder

Cylinder mowers give a finer, closer cut than rotary mowers because the cylinder mower blade uses a scissor action, which gives a cleaner cut than a rotary blade
Cylinder mowers work best on even, well-manicured lawns!
Cylinder mowers are fitted with rear rollers to give your lawn a striped effect back to top

Chainsaws

Chainsaws significantly reduce the time and effort needed to cut firewood, prune and cut down trees.

Always wear protective clothing - gloves, ear protection, helmet and boots.
Stand on firm ground and clear an escape route
When cutting a pile of wood, make sure the chainsaw's tip doesn’t touch the logs behind the one you are cutting because it may cause a kickback

Electric or petrol engine?
Electric chainsaw motors are lightweight and easy to start. They require some minor periodic maintenance and have to be used close to an electrical outlet. Petrol chainsaw engines are more powerful and are better suited for heavy-duty tasks like cutting hardwoods. Generally the longer the blade length the more suitable the machine is for heavy-duty cutting. You should also consider the weight of the unit and your ability to handle it comfortably.

Mowers - Electric Rotary

Rotary mowers achieve a coarser finish than cylinder mowers but are better able to cope with uneven and irregular shaped lawns.
Simple height adjustment makes it easy for you to choose from a selection of cutting heights
Wheels support the weight of the mower making it easy to push and easier to mow in a straight line.
Steel decks are more durable than plastic, meaning better long-term value

Mowers - Petrol Rotary

Petrol rotary mowers are an ideal choice for larger gardens because they are powerful enough to cope with the demands of longer grass and larger lawns
Self propelled petrol mowers are driven and you just have to guide them across the lawn. More effort is required with a push mower as you have to propel them.
An electric start petrol engine is very easy to use as there is no manual starter-cord to pull.
To give your lawn the classic striped effect take a look mowers which have a built in roller

Strimmers/Trimmers

Trimmers are the ideal tool to access the places that mowers cannot reach, such as awkward corners of a lawn, around trees and against fence panels. Look for a trimmer with an edger so that you can trim the edges of flowerbeds and pathways too.

Safety
Trimmers, edgers and brush cutters are high speed cutting tools and you should wear goggle and gloves to protect yourself from flying debris.

Electric Trimmers
Lightweight
Quiet
Perfect for small to medium gardens

Petrol Trimmers
Heavy duty cutting power ideal for trimming large areas
Portable - no cords or leads
