Winter Garden Tips

Snow filled gardens may look beautiful but is your garden suffering underneath?

Colour also proves quite hard to achieve throughout this season, but to add some sparkle by planting deciduous shrubs and trees such as silver birch (Betula) and colourful dogwoods (Cornus), as their bright stems will shine out in the weak winter sunlight.

Evergreens are also a winter essential as their texture and shape will brighten up your garden when all else is bare. Shrubs such as Skimmia japonica and Viburnum tinus are amongst the best to invest in at this time of year.

If you have a pond, you need to pay particular attention to your aquatic plants over the winter season as they are likely to be killed at the first sign of frost. You may want to put a few plants in your greenhouse during the colder months for extra protection. back to top

Winter Lawn Tips

Try to rest the lawn as much as possible during winter. If practical keep off when wet or frosty, as the grass plants are not actively growing; they will not repair themselves if damaged until the spring.
Only mow the lawn if necessary; this will depend upon weather conditions and temperatures at the time. Do not mow if heavy frosts are expected or if the ground is very wet.
